How much do you know about the couple next door?
When Emily and Ben move in next door to Dr Burman and his wife Anita, they are keen to get to know their new neighbours. Outgoing and sociable, Emily tries to befriend the doctor’s wife, but Anita is strangely subdued, barely leaving the house, and terrified of answering the phone.
When Emily goes missing a few weeks later, Ben is plunged into a panic. His wife has left him a note, but can she really have abandoned him for another man? Or has Emily’s curiosity about the couple next door led her straight into danger?
This book was wild. It wasn’t really a mystery because the whole time we know somewhat what is going to happen, we just don’t know exactly how it’s going to happen. The suspense was intense. I found it hard to put this book down. It was one of those books that just stayed with you until you started reading it again.
I’d find myself at work thinking “What’s going to happen next? Can I really trust her? Can I trust any of them?
Lisa Stone did a fantastic job of creating an unreliable main character but not too unreliable to where I didn’t like her. I just couldn’t trust her fully. She also had multiple POV and the other parts? They were a doozy. So well written!
The biggest downside to this book was that the synopsis gave away way too much. And I know that’s not necessarily the author’s fault and you can only be so vague with a synopsis, but giving away a huge plot point made that twist less exciting as I knew it was coming.
The best thing about this book? The ending!! I DID NOT see that coming. I got chills when I read it. I had to read it five times to make sure it was real. I would recommend this book just for the ending. I still can’t believe it and will occasionally go back to read that last chapter.
So if you like suspenseful books with unreliable characters and a huuuuge twist at the end that changes the whole book for you, check this one out. As soon as possible. Fall in the rabbit whole that is Emily’s weird life.
